Artist: Nicolai Cikovsky
Material: Oil Paint on Canvas
Commissioned by the United States Treasury Department's Section of Painting and Sculpture, this mural was painted for the Silver Spring Post Office to educate the American public about their culture and history. After the Old Silver Spring Post Office was closed, the work was moved to the old Silver Spring Library. When the new library was built, it was moved again to the lobby next to the check out desk.
The Old Tavern mural represents Civil War Union soldiers resting in front of the Eagle Inn and reading their mail from home. The Eagle Inn once stood in Sligo Village. The artist, Nicolai Cikovsky, taught at the Corcoran School of Art and was a talented muralist, painter, and lithographer.
