Lotus Columns

Mary Ann Mear’s sculpture in the garden in front of the Argent is a series of vertical elements along a curved path.

Mary Ann Mears has concentrated on developing a series of vertical elements that run along a curved pathway. These column-like sculptures not only frame the route for passersby but also interact dynamically with the geometry of the adjacent building.

The columns are simple in form, featuring a three-sided design, yet they possess an enigmatic quality as their appearance shifts when viewed from different angles. Their asymmetrical, organic shapes—where triangular planes twist, swell, and recede—suggest a hidden energy conveyed through their torque. Although crafted from rigid stainless steel with a burnished finish, the forms exhibit a surprising lyricism, their hard edges softened by the gentle flow of their curves.

An additional layer to the work is the interplay between sculpture and architecture. While the pieces evoke architectural language, they are not structural supports but are instead designed purely for expressive purposes. Their role is to articulate the surrounding space, creating an engaging experience for those moving through the installation.

The title of the work draws inspiration from Egyptian architecture, albeit with a few playful twists. The sculpture’s upper sections recall the triangular lotus blossoms seen in Egyptian reliefs and paintings, differing from the stylized lotus typically found on the formal capitals of Egyptian columns. In contrast to the massive, densely arranged Egyptian lotus columns, this work presents a more delicate grove engaged in a graceful dialogue.

In its expressive content, the series of columns is intended to infuse the site with energy, elegance, and a sense of joie de vivre, enhancing the experience of the space with both vitality and sophistication.
