Using real-world examples, students learn about the various elements of a documentary proposal, how to craft a proposal that stands out amongst the crowd, and practice creating these elements as it relates to a project of their own.

TEACHING ARTIST: Justin Reifert

Justin Reifert is a filmmaker, producer, and educator. His latest documentary short, Never Again Para Nadie, has screened at IFFBoston, the United Nations Association Film Festival, and the Woodstock Film Festival, among many others. It won Best Social Justice Film at the Big Muddy Film Festival, Best Documentary Short at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival, as well as the Jury Award for Documentary Short at the Anchorage International Film Festival. He also works as a producer on political ads and most recently was the lead producer for paid media for Stacey Abrams' 2022 campaign for governor of Georgia. He has been an Assistant Professor in Residence at Northwestern University in Qatar and Assistant Professor of Film Studies and Production at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. He holds BAs in International Relations and Russian Language from Michigan State University, a graduate certificate in Documentary Filmmaking from The George Washington University, and an MFA in Documentary Media from Northwestern University.
