Brought to you by Lumina Theatre Group, whose previous script-in-hand performances include Dickens’s Great Expectations and Austen’s Pride & Prejudice.

When pretty widow Clara Copperfield marries the tyrannous and sadistic Edward Murdstone, life takes a grim turn for her little son, David. Sent first to a violent boarding school, then to work in a bottling factory, David can only look ahead to a bleak future. But when he runs off to find his great aunt, Betsey Trotwood, his progress to adulthood becomes more assured and altogether happier.

Into his life comes a glorious cast of personalities, from his loyal and loving nurse Peggotty, and his steadfast friend Tommy Traddles, to the charismatic but unreliable James Steerforth, the feckless Wilkins Micawber, and the famously ’umble Uriah Heep, perhaps Dickens’s creepiest villain.

With its mix of comedy and tragedy, memorable characters and vividly drawn settings, it is plain to see why Charles Dickens called this novel his “favourite child”.
