THE GREEKS HAD A WORD FOR THEM
New DCP Restoration | World Premiere. Introduction by film historian David Pierce
Three gold diggers shamelessly pursue wealthy men to live in the lap of luxury: Schatze (Joan Blondell) targets aging millionaires, Polaire (Madge Evans) tries to choose between a musical career (with strings attached) and a marriage proposal, while the gorgeous Jean (Ina Claire) loves nothing more than losing her dress at convenient times to steal men from Polaire. Visually stunning with gowns by Coco Chanel and Art Deco sets by seven-time Oscar®-winner Richard Day, the film was based on the notorious 1930 play by Zoe Akins that Will Hays declared was "wholly unsuitable for pictures." Minor plot adjustments were not enough to forestall brutal cuts by state and local censors, and the film eventually vanished in favor of its remake, HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE. This newly restored version from the Library of Congress reinstates all the missing footage, finally revealing the film's uncensored allure
